Bedtime prayers for preschoolers
Preschoolers (roughly ages 2–5) pray best in short, concrete sentences they can repeat after you. Below are twelve prayers we use in Sanctum's bedtime devotionals — each one is a few seconds long, uses words a three-year-old already knows, and ends the day calmly rather than winding it up again.

A gentle 5-minute bedtime routine
- 1. Dim and settle (1 min). Lights low, toys away, one deep breath together. The signal matters more than the words.
- 2. Look back (1 min). Ask one question: “What was your favourite bit of today?” Their answer becomes the prayer.
- 3. Pray together (1 min). Choose one prayer below. Say a line, let them echo it. Repetition is how preschoolers learn to pray on their own.
- 4. Bless them (1 min). Say prayer 11 over them by name, with a hand on their head or back.
- 5. Same words, every night (1 min). End with one fixed sentence — “Goodnight, God” works well. Predictability is what makes bedtime feel safe.
12 short bedtime prayers
1. The shortest prayer
“Thank you, God, for today. Goodnight. Amen.”
Perfect for very young toddlers, or nights when everyone is tired.
2. Thank you for my day
“Thank you, God, for my family, for my food, and for my bed. Thank you for everything good today. Amen.”
3. Three good things
“God, today I liked ______, ______ and ______. Thank you for all three. Amen.”
Let your child fill in the blanks — it teaches gratitude by naming it.
4. Keep us safe tonight
“Dear God, please keep our house safe and quiet tonight. Watch over everyone I love while we sleep. Amen.”
5. A prayer for a scared night
“God, I feel a little scared. Please stay close to me. You are bigger than the dark. Amen.”
Pair it with a nightlight and a hand on their back.
6. Bless the people I love
“God, bless Mummy, bless Daddy, bless ______ and ______. Give them a happy sleep. Amen.”
7. Sorry and starting fresh
“God, today I did something I wish I hadn't. I'm sorry. Thank you for loving me anyway. Tomorrow I'll try again. Amen.”
8. A prayer for the animals
“Thank you, God, for dogs and cats and birds and every little creature. Keep them warm tonight. Amen.”
Preschoolers pray for animals happily — a lovely way in on quiet nights.
9. Be still
“God, help my body be still and my heart be calm. Be still, and know that you are God. Amen.”
Inspired by Psalm 46:10.
10. A prayer for tomorrow
“God, tomorrow I get to ______. Please help it be a kind day. Help me be kind too. Amen.”
11. The blessing prayer (said over your child)
“May God bless you and keep you. May God smile at you and be kind to you. May God give you peace as you sleep.”
Adapted from Numbers 6:24–26. Say this while stroking their hair.
12. Goodnight, God
“Goodnight, God. Thank you for being with me all day. I know you'll be here in the morning too. Amen.”
Helping it stick
- Keep it under a minute. A preschooler's attention for a spoken prayer is short — finishing early is better than losing them halfway.
- Let them lead sometimes. Fill-in-the-blank prayers (3, 6, 10) give them ownership without needing to invent words.
- Don't fix their prayers. If they thank God for their tractor, that counts. Correction teaches them prayer is a performance.
- Repeat, don't rotate. Two or three prayers said nightly for a month will be memorised for life; twelve rotated randomly won't.
